Thanks for the which/that clarification.
I was not opining that his original version didn't read better, I was pointing out that it was possible to simultaneously avoid splitting the infinitive and not sound utterly stupid.
Note I'm not asterisking my split infinitive and saying it can't be avoided. My infinitive is split, and I like it that way.
