I know it's not Flame War Friday, so I will point this out as nicely as possible:
Actually, you apologized for *sounding* that way. There's a difference between apologizing for *sounding* like you thought that race = class (which would have been appropriate if your message did not accurately represent what you were thinking, i.e., you drafted it poorly), and apologizing that you unintentionally equated race with class (which seems to have been what actually happened).
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but seriously - if you consciously recognize that you have some unconscious (subconscious?) racist thought patterns (and honestly, it's hard not to have developed some in American culture), it can help you be more alert to those thought patterns in the future.
