Actually, you apologized for *sounding* that way. There's a difference between apologizing for *sounding* like you thought that race = class (which would have been appropriate if your message did not accurately represent what you were thinking, e.g., you drafted it poorly), and apologizing that you unintentionally equated race with class (which seems to have been what actually happened).
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but seriously - if you conscioulsy recognize that you have some unconscious (subconscious?) racist thought patterns (and honestly, it's hard not to have developed some in American culture), it can help you be more alert to those thought patterns in the future.

Not to litter the board with my inane postings, but I included the white part because I did not see anything other than the white commuters doing this, and over and over, different people on different trains. It was more an observation than anything else.
But it is inexusable that I could find the CNN picture yesterday offensive but yet unconsciously contribute to stereotypes myself whether conscious or unconscious by including a racial label rather than a socioeconomic label. Gotta watch myself and like you said be aware of that.
