The trailers for this one seemed like it was trying to be a full on sci-fi extravaganza that used the full on special effects instead of the situation to magnify the story.

The movie within the movie wasn't bad. The full on sci-fi extravaganza parts weren't so good. But there is a good hour where Riddick and a small group are running from the white hot light of one angry sun. That part wasn't so bad since it was the exact opposite of the first movie.
It wasn't horrible. I just think they started shooting it too early -- like they had a good story, but didn't really have a solid script.
