Friendster is one of many social sites that operates on the general principle that people meet each other through their friends. I think it started up about a year and a half ago, and it grew really big around this time last year. A lot of people left in frustration because their servers were too slow to handle the volume.
You put up a little profile about yourself (favorite music, books, tv, interests, post some pictures, etc.) and add people that you know personally as your friends to your personal network. You can put up global messages to your friends (one of the people on my friends list is a DJ and he has 325 people on his friends list that can see his schedule every week) and you can PM anyone within three degrees of separation to you. You can also search common interests and read the profiles of anyone within three degrees of friendship of you. So I have 39 first degree friends, 1209 second degree friends (friends of my friends) and 38,512 third degree friends (friends of friends of my friends). A lot of people I know use it in lieu of e-mail. Oh, and there's the testimonial feature, which lets you make fun of your friend on his or her profile. (
