I had no idea that was a European affectation. Well, la-di-dah for me!
It is considered American style to cut with one's fork in the left and the knife in the right, and then switch the fork to the right hand to put the cut food into the mouth.

It is European style to manage, somehow, to get the food to one's mouth with the left hand, even if that hand is not dominant.
