In the event it's not, you definitely need to get them out of there. Racoons can cause serious damage to your house. Plus, they shit and piss and bring their food into the house and it's going to start smelling pretty quick. Plus, now that it has braved your house, you can bet it will do it again. It's only going to get worse.

Yep, get rid of them and do whatever you have to do to keep them out, i.e. close up any holes, cut back tree branches, etc. that would give them access to the roof. Future generations will keep coming back if you don't.
We had a persistent problem with raccoons living under our deck in the back and had a trapper remove them on several occasions (here, licensed trappers do catch and release in outlying woods, but I think they have a racket going, and outlying trappers catch and release theirs in our neighborhood). Couldn't just leave them there because of the kids. Finally got to the point that we had to modify the deck itself by putting new boards around the bottom planted into the soil several inches deep to keep them from digging under.
