TdF Question

Cycling Fans:

Because of all the enthusiasm on the boards about the race(s), I've been reading some of the news articles about the TdF. I did not understand the controversy today about Armstrong chasing down Simonini (sp). What was unsportsmanlike about chasing him down--I know they hate each other, and I know Simonini has no chance of winning and is not a threat. Still, is it customary to let other people win? It's unsportsmanlike to try and win the stage? It seemed the 6 leaders asked Armstrong to back off, and he did when Simonini agreed to fall back as well. WTF. I guess I just don't understand the unofficial rules of the game. Is it like not piling on the points in Football or Basketball when you're really far ahead?
