Bringing the arts to the PB

I'm sure that D!verseworks is probably partially funded by the NEA, which will piss off some of you, but their next exhibit is an interactive look at American politics during the campaign. Some of you may be interested in participating and adding a different perspective:

Margaret Crane|Jon Winet: 2004 - America & The Globe
September 16 - November 6, 2004
Opening reception: Thursday, September 16, 6-9pm as part of Downtown Stomp-around
DiverseWorks Main Gallery

For the fifth consecutive presidential campaign season, the new media artist team of Margaret Crane|Jon Winet is producing a multi-media work focusing on democratic practice in America. During this election year, the interdisciplinary 2004 America & The Globe project explores the democratic process and the spectacle of presidential campaigns in the United States. Viewing the campaign process as an exercise in political theater, Crane|Winet's approach results in a complex and technologically layered presentation that includes public forums and discussions, written publications and web actions, exhibitions, film and video. DiverseWorks is working in collaboration with Aurora Picture Show, Lawndale Art Center, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Voices Breaking Boundaries on a joint project entitled The Voting Machine, which consists of a series of election-related programs hosted by each organization in the months leading up to the November election.

Over the past fifteen years, the collaboration between Margaret Crane|Jon Winet has produced work that revolves around the language and images of the information age. Most of their work focuses on the psycho-social dynamics of contemporary urban life. In 1988, Crane|Winet launched their first presidential election year project. Subsequent collaborations have included Sunset (Los Angeles, 1997), Nightfall at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco, 1998), Democracy-The Last Campaign (Minneapolis/Buffalo/San Francisco/Irvine, 2000-2001), and Monument (Newcastle, 2003).

For those of you in Houston, the opening is at D!verseworks on September 16, the night before ACL starts.
