ETA: America is the greatest nation on Earth not because it has the strongest military (although it does), nor because of its amazing capacity to generate wealth (which is stunning), nor its incredible ability to produce so much foodstuffs it feeds itself and much more (although this is true), but rather because it can claim to the world that it and its people are good, or at least just.
By engaging in torture and humiliation; by engaging in comparative justice (sure we tortured some captives, but they're killing us), we lose our moral authority. Without moral authority, we become nothing more than an Ottoman Empire, or an Austro-Hungary, or a Spain - dominant for a while, but then decending back into local obscurity.
