I agree. I don't think it's barbaric, but spicy food is one of life's great pleasures, and I wouldn't want to raise a kid who grows up to be a joyless picky-eating pain in the ass.

Mmm, wasabi! (I love the way it hurts between the eyes.)

ETA: while the hot sauce itself doesn't seem cruel, on a larger level I think it's is cruel for a parent to connect so closely food with a child's discipline (either punishment or reward).
