I agree with you though that I wouldn't want my kid to have an aversion to spicy food or think of it as a punishment.

I can't stand whiny kids. I know I should have more control over my emotions, but whenever I hear my friends' or relatives' little whiny bastards disobey their parents, with no consequences, it drives me batty. I forget who said this, but it's too bad you can't discipline other peoples' kids. I don't really care what the form is, time out, spanking, harsh words, hot sauce, soap, so long as it is consistently applied and the kid learns not to disobey. Of course, my kid is perfect.
