This is significant because, as I understand it, a purple heart can't be awarded for self-inflicted wounds, unless self inflicted during fire with the enemy.
For those of you that don't trust drudge, I heard the same story last night from CC Collins of Time.

While I absolutely refuse to criticize the guy's military service, I think the record should be absolutely clear and unobfuscated as to what he brags about. If the metal he carries around in his body is from a grenade that he himself threw in the immediate absence of any enemy soldiers (see yesterday's WaPo link), than he should not be linking it to his medals or his Purple Hearts.
Furthermore, if the second or third purple heart was for nothing more than bumping his arm, than I think hundreds of thousands of other veterans deserve medals they didn't receive.
Still, this story sucks and its hurting America (the Big big story).
First, commandante generallisimo (Sp?) Bush used family connections for a plum spot, and then never faced the risks which Johnson and Kennedy sent so many other young men to face. (Note: those two motherfuckers should be burned in effigy every day in this country). Bottom line: the controversy over this sends a horrible message to our youth unless we turn him out. (Note: even a few self-described conservatives here have said service should not be a prerequisite... while not necessarily untrue, it should be a quite positive factor).
Second, lieutenant O'Kerrystien got into a soft unit that was thrown into dangerous use after he joined. Hey, its better than the infantry, right? They probably promised him Kennesbunkport-type sailing experiences. He gets thrown into battle. He generally acts okay (read: admirably), but gets out way earlier than hundreds of throusands of others were ever given a chance to. He comes home and acts like a complete asshole hippy. Than he runs on his record of bravery and acts outraged when half of his former comrades express revulsion, basically at the sight of him.
They start questioning the awards that got him out after only 4 months. In comparison, Bush never needed anything to get out because he never was in.
What do the kids learn from this? Neither candidate wanted to be there, and the smadda one figured out a way not be there at all. When you grow up, be smart about how you avoid the infantry.
Which is to say, I hate this fucking election, and I hate these two jagoffs for playing hero in a manner that insults millions of our nations true heros. Fuck them. Fuck them all.
