IOC and Bush

So there's this brouhaha over an ad that the bush campaign is running about the Olympics, citing the Iraqi and Afghanistan teams as two new* democracies. The United States Olympic Committee has asked the Bush campaign to pull the ad because they have rights to term "Olympics." (I think they've been fairly agressive in defending their copyright.) The campaign told them to fuck off.

Apparently the IOC, isn't overjoyed with the Bush administration's response, though officially it's a Bush/USOC dispute, there's been a suggestion that the refusal to push the ads pretty much eliminates New York's chances of getting the games in 2012. From what I've heard from friends in Atlanta, New Yorkers may consider crossing the aisle in thanks. (cite: Article in German, translation in Kos. This is ultimately going to be impossible to prove, because New York wasn't really high on the list to begin with, and the 9/11 sympathy that got New York on the list in the first place has since worn off.

*Not quite up and running.
