He entered the field late, but yeah -- he was their boy when he did. Anything that happened those first few months should be remembered from the prism of someone trying to knock Dean off the pedestal.

The case can be made that he was "too far left" or would be too vocal in criticizing other mainstream Democrats. On the other hand, the "too far left" has already been attached to Kerry now. Further, I never heard Dean or any other seasoned professional politician say anything close to Clark's "I'm in favor of abortion on demand for anyone who wants one" (paraphrasing) remark.

So any reason they could give for knocking Dean out looks like BS from this seat.

All of that said, I don't really see the Clintons as too active in the Kerry campaign either. You'd think that Bubba would do okay if he really wanted someone to be president.
