Frankly, I think they should have just gone after him for the hippie anti-war crap. It goes nicely with the "flip-flop" theme the R-s are so keen on, there are no pesky records out there that can disprove the allegations, and for a hell of a lot of Vets, it's a legitimate beef. And hey, Strong Military Leaders of the Free World don't get stoned and sing Kumbaya at peace rallies. (Bush was wise enough not to be photographed before he turned 40 years old. Seriously, aside from the pic on the plane and a few from Yale, has anyone ever seen a picure of W under the age of 40?) A whole bunch of very pissed off vets about Kerry's turning on them and joining the peace movement would have been a lot harder to disprove and the anger would have felt more legitimate.
(Disclosure: Both my parents protested Vietnam. Drafted dad was a member of the Medical Committee on Human Rights while in the army and manned first aid stations during protests. I think he was in uniform. I suspect his FBI file is interesting.)
