More on point, I was just reading a summary on Yahoo. Apparently the "rescue attempt" today wasn't planned. The Russians' hand was forced when fighting broke out when the hostage takers began firing on a group of escaping hostages and the Russian soldiers began returning fire to provide cover.
Not that anybody's got warm fuzzies for the hostage takers / Chechnians* right now anyway, but shooting kids in the back knocks you down to the lowest of low.
*The Russians are now claiming they have found the bodies of several "Arabs" and believe this operation was joint between Chechnians and outside radical Islamist supporters.
