I don't get this at all. I can see dropping hints about wanting to get married or engaged or committed or whatever, though it seems a lot more productive to actually have a discussion about it. But unless someone specifically says "hey, I'm buying you an incredibly expensive small rock, do you have a preference on which kind?" I'll just be gracious and happy about what the rock means rather than what it looks like/weighs/cut/clarity/etc. This probably explains why no one goes out shopping for rocks for me.
