We are in agreement. It is the woman who will have to wear the ring, so it should be something she likes. But most of those things can be learned through casual conversation. "Honey, that ring looks cool. I dig the setting. You?" "Well, I don't like square cut stones, but I love the platinum. It really helps accentuates the stone." Etc.
