Any discussion of 50-75 years of history necessarily paints in broad strokes.

I think you're ignoring the fact that, while there were massive protests in Europe and the U.S. against the deployment of U.S medium-range nuclear missiles in Britain and Western Europe -- we deployed them with the permission of the governments involved (UK and Germany, I believe). NATO also OK'd it. The allies who mattered most gave approval -- we did not put nuclear weapons in their countries without goverenmental permission.
