I don't think it had anything to do with money. I think he was making self-effacing joke about having fooled a woman who by all rights should have been out of his league to marry him. This is reinforced by the fact that he prefaced the joke with the phrase, "like all three of us." It's an old, old joke and seldom has anything to do with money.
