Isn't it hip something one defines one's self, and not merely the mimicry of Madison Avenue? To be hip is to transcend the ordinary that can be bought with money.

Books, music, the mystical and the exotic are where hip truly resides.

At 5 and 6, we introduced our Children to CS Lewis and Alice in Wonderland, each of which are eternally hip. Perhaps a nice 19th century edition of Alice would set them on the right path.

If you are looking for the more material, I'd suggest dress up -- undoubtedly, there's some great stuff for dress up in East Africa (when my sister was there she sent back some great clothes for my girls), but perhaps a couple of nice silk kimonos or the like might be nice.

And, of course, there is always music. At 6 they are ready to make some noise. East Africa ROCKS as far as good instruments for kids, but adding a llama bone flute or something similar from South America could be cool.

Just some thoughts. In case you don't want to go Madison Avenue.
