Don't be ridiculous. That kind of stuff happens all the time. Kent Hrbeck pulled an Atlanta runner's leg off the bag in the World Series on a pickoff in a tight game and that stood. Last year, a catcher purposefully smashed into Jeter while sliding into third after his hand was already on the bag, knocked him off, dislocating his shoulder and the ump called him out. So, don't make this more than it is, especially when you got the call.

The 1st base umpire should be embarassed too. How can you call a runner safe BEFORE he touches the bag?
He shouldn't have said he was safe, but it was clear that he was trying to indicate that the runner was not out since the ball popped out. How would it have made a difference anyway?

Wrong. Guys can go like 5 feet on the foul side of the baseline running to first. I saw Torii Hunter do just that against us earlier this season. They can't run in fair territory when they would interfere with a throw to first. Besides, even if the rule said you couldn't run outside the baseline on your way to first, he was clearly within the normal parameters and you're smokin' some shit if you think he wasn't.
