Not only do they NOT enforce the 1 item plus a carry-on rule (you see people with shopping bags full of crap) but they also don't really really enforce the "preboarding" rule (children under 5 or old people in wheelchairs) - they'll let damn neared anyone with kids or gray hair preboard. I much prefer to have a reserved seat. That said, I also did not want to have a layover in LA or or Salt Lake City (Alaska/United/everyother airline that wasn't America West) and I would rather peel my skin off (hi Coltrane!) than fly America West.
