The donation was, I think, an actual show of human shame on the part of the partner involved. I have no clue if the firm funded it or if he did it personally. For all I know he may have billed the client for it.
C'mon, I can't be the only person who has made the firm eat my costs for buggering my schedule.

A client once cut short my vacation and, after covering the costs, of course, he then sent a very nice gift certificate for a stay at the Ritz of our choice. A kind of next vacation free deal.
