It is, of course, also possible to be underprotective. I got to play with guns as a kid. The day I figured out how to use a bullet (actually, shot rather than a bullet) to detonate a small container of gunpowder was a lot of fun!

My brother used to make bombs out of things like model rocket engines. This continued until he put a match to a concoction he'd made from sugar and potassium nitrate, sending burning sugar over most of his arm. He thought it was funny at first, until the burn sensation started settling in and he started crying like a Cal fan on Bowl Selection Day.
Potassium nitrate sucks.
