True. Probably, its best that they learn this at home or somewhere other than vacation. Not by teaching them that their parents won't be there for them when they wake up in the dark at a strange hotel far away from home. Especially for newly adopted kids with prior attachment issues.
Also - you are just saying kids have to learn you won't always be there for them. That is fine. When kids wake up in the middle of the night from a bad dream, or whatever, I guess you could just shout through the door "go back to sleep; it's just a dream". This way, you have taught them that you won't be going in the room even though they want you to, but at least there is someone out there that has heard and acknowledged them.
Vietmom (I suspect you'd be falling all over yourself running in to comfort the child from a bad dream though)
