So how do folks feel when some new associate gets a couple of prime, career enhancing projects and the associate who has given 2000 hours for five years is forgotten? Shiny penny syndrome gets to lots of people.

Fuck, at my firm "the associate who has given [only] 2000 hours for five years" isn't even an associate anymore. All that stuff is interpersonal relationships, anyway. People want to work with subordinates who will blow smoke up their asses.
If I liked sailing, I could get a bunch of good work from the "sailing" partner at my firm. That's ok, though, because the "scotch" partner (well, one of the many) keeps me busy enough.
