I thought he was 33. Yes, a 5 year deal for a catcher in his 30's is insane especially a deal with a no trade clause. He's a decent hitter, but not a DH kind of hitter. Not now and defintely not 2 or 3 years from now (unless he starts working out with Barry Bonds' trainer). Scott Boras will probably screw this up more than the Red Sox. Does he really think that ANY team will sign Varitek to a big number 5 year deal??

I find it quite odd that some top Sox players (Varitek) don't seem anxious to resign to a championship team, that others ran like rats from a ship (Pedro, Lowe, Kapler) and that the only pitchers that [so far] found the team attractive were Boomer and Halama.
