It sounds to me that whatever Savage was talking about is a bit more extreme than the situation described in the text you posted. I can't see how your variety of popping could lead to anything akin to castration, unless the popper were to actually bite off the poppee's balls, rather than simply pop them. But then again, as you correctly noted, YMMV.
