I don't know why the kid or anyone else would expect that he should be able to keep $75,000 worth of jewelry. He was clearly joking around when he asked. I guess the only problem was that Daunte let him wear it too long. If he had taken it back before returning to the podium, the family wouldn't have already spent that money in their heads.
That said, I hate all that fucking jewelry. What a useless waste of money. All it accomplishes is a "nyah nyah, nyah nyah nyah -- You don't got no ice cream" attitude.
