Sometimes it looks like he's putting topspin on it, like a baseline forehand. I think he's throwing a split-fingered football that drops off the table. It's really strange looking - almost as if it defies physics and stops/drops in mid-air.
ETA: I've noticed this effect when I throw and my hand is too far back on the ball.
