NEW YORK - Peter Jennings, the chief ABC News anchorman for more than 20 years, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will begin outpatient treatment next week, the network said Tuesday.
Jennings, 66, has been feeling ill for the past several months and was replaced Saturday on coverage of the pope’s death by anchor Charles Woodruff.
So, if you've been feeling ill for several months - you just ignore it and hope it will go away?

It's not rational, but a lot of people do that. (See, e.g., a number of my relatives.) I think for a lot of people, particularly people as intelligent as Peter Jennings, they know the truth, but don't want to face it yet, because that knowledge (or confirmation) changes everything for the worse. You become a sick person, rather than just yourself.
That's sad news. Peter Jennings is my favorite network news anchor. Maybe it's because he's Canadian and says "hoose" for "house."
