You actually were always required to use a working email address (read the TOS) but we disabled the verification to make it easy for everyone to sign up. I figured given all the times they had already had to sign up (what was it 3? 4?) it would be best to make it very easy to re-register for this site.
Now that all the people who registered on the original site(s) re-registered (or don't plan on re-registering) it seems reasonable to turn it back on. In this way enforcing the rule that requires a working email address.
However, you can still use the same email address for the socks you don't have. Even if you leave it possible for people to email you, they aren't provided with your address when they click on the link. They are provided with a form in which they type the email and send it to you.
