I've seen people between 40-75 my whole life who kicked the bucket right after voluntarily "retiring", and I sometimes think its because they honestly could not figure out what else they were supposed to do... so it must be time to die. And I'm being serious here. I once worked with an early 40s law enforcer who up and left with his fiancee to Florida to go live the poor life on the beach. A month later, we got word back that he was dead of some ridiculous cause or another. Heart attack maybe? I forget.
Remember the old guy in the Shawshank Redemption who couldn't figure out his new place in the world when he was released? Sort of like that.
So all I'm saying is that maybe Rehnquist should sit down with Bush, Frist and even Reid, and they can discuss (in complete confidence) what to do when he's gone. But no way do I ever suggest that a hard worker retire. Too often, they don't know what to do when they do, and its asking them to commit suicide.
Than again, if we put him in a nursing home with Bilmore, maybe they could be roomies.

On the other hand, there's a lot to do in the world besides writing opinions or, for that matter, posts.
With that, I have decided that it is time to announce my own retirement. At the end of the day, I will sign off for good.
Much as I've enjoyed the old thrust and parry here, and come to respect those who enjoy a good substantive debate (and even seem open to occassionally changing their mind), my plan is to be spending a lot more time out on the farm with my family and a lot less time working and, of course, proscrastinating and delaying work (which is what I do here). I wish you all good debates on zoning, 401(k)s, and the Middle East. May your Penske socks be few, may Hank and Bilmore be sober, and may the good guy (that's you, Ty) always win in the end.
I know there will be a bruising debate to fill my spot here, and I only ask that you all think first of the institution, and not of partisan politics.
