I'm not sure I understand what he's getting at with the first sentence, but it does show that he's got the confusion/merging of traditional gender roles down. Mary and Laura and Ma (and maybe even Nellie) sewed. Pa and Arthur (Arnold?) and the big guy who lived nearby reaped.
