No, I don't think so. The effete faux-intellectual thing is an attempt to sound like Gore Vidal. I kinda like that pompous tone; its amusing to see anyone who thinks so much of himself that he'll try it (and he if he fails at it, its great humor).
The tone I’m annoyed with is that asexual, soft-toned whisper the hosts use. Its like they’re afraid to use any volume because that might offend a segment of audience with overly-sensitive ears. The women who do this sound like they’re talking to babies. The man who do it sound like nasally dweebs. But worse than the auditory waste they piss all over the airwaves is the fact that its all contrived.* These people don’t talk like a bunch of Casper Milquetoasts in real life. They’re just doing it because it’s the way they think their audience wants them to sound - utterly unoffensive and void of every human emotion. They seem to think any spirited rhetoric is a sign of aggression... and Go Help Us, but we cannot seem aggressive. They categorize that as “male patriarchal power speaking,” or some other shit term some professor taught them.
Talking like a scared shitless eunuch doesn’t make you an intellectual or open minded. All it does is put the listener to sleep.
But then, they probably don't want people like me listening anyway.
* Not the substance, just the sound of it.
