Jim Crow redux

Incomprehensible to some, this apparently still happens, Hank. The AJC has surprising statistics on the possession (or lack thereof) of photo IDs by certain segments of the population in GA, and the hassles involved in getting one.
  • [P]roponents of the photo ID law tend to overstate how easy it is to get a driver's license in Georgia. Cox's office, using information supplied by Census counts, reports that white Georgians are five times more likely to have a motor vehicle than black Georgians. The League of Women Voters and the American Association of Retired Persons estimates there were more than 150,000 Georgians over the age of 60 without driver's licenses who voted in the 2004 election.

Those who don't drive would be allowed to use a state-approved identification that could be purchased at one of the 56 motor vehicle safety licensing branches in the state. But those 56 branches serve all 159 counties in the state — meaning residents of many counties don't have an office nearby. Georgia residents who have been to a license branch in recent years know the long lines they have to endure to get served. Plus, the $10 charge for a state ID — waived only if a voter declares indigency — smacks of a back-door poll tax — an ugly remnant of discriminatory voting practices ruled unconstitutional decades ago.
There should be a national photo ID required for federal elections. No cost. Problem solved.
