I think it is far beyond silliness. The "theories" aren't mutually exclusive because they are apples and oranges. One is a scientific theory - which doesn't mean what most people seem to think "theory" means, in any event - and one is ... not. Hell, gravity is a theory in scientific terms, and one that is not as well "proved" as evolution through discovery of actual mechanisms. When the empty space in the heads of intelligent design-ists causes them to start floating about, I'll perhaps deign to listen to bullshit about how evolution's only a "theory" and therefore has no more validity than the idea that the entire earth was created last Thursday by giant ice cream cones from Seti Alpha 5.
I have no particular problem with "intelligent design" or even creationism being taught. But not in science classes. It has nothing to do with science, or critical scientific thinking about current "theories." That's as stupid as taking literary critical theory and applying it to a fact-based discipline like history ... oh, wait ....
