Somewhat like the snail darter, there is a species of Republican that views America's greatness as drawn almost exclusively from the freeness of its capital markets, and believes fiercely that all cultural issues are mere "window dressing."

Republicans in Kansas, Georgia and elsewhere may not recognize you, as their concerns may revolve more around whether Democrats really ARE trying to burn their bibles, or whether Hollywood is trying to corrupt their youth or turn them gay. The cognitive dissonance may be painful, but them's the costs of a big tent, right?
Its a two party system. And I think it works rather well. And it is the fighting within the partys that I find more interesting and more fun.

????? That statement was directly relevant to Ty's point. I was not responding to my original post, someone else was. If we have left that point it is because someone else took us here not me.

part of the problem is that many in Hollywood and New York forget what makes this country great. One of those things that has led to the success of America is the American publics distrust of government. Many people in Hollywood, New York and San Francisco seem to have forgotten that.

Originally posted by Gattigap [list][size=1]This, you may now realize, is why some people thought you were actually making an argument that there's some cultural component to why America is the greatest place ever. We all forgot to apply the Spanky Free Market Filter, and remember that really what you meant was that country music stars have the same instinct that America is great because of free markets. I'll keep scouring the lyrics databases for evidence of this -- so far, I've made it to "Drop Kick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life."..
In the red states there is a healthy mistrust of government. That is reflected in most of the state consitutions where they limit the amount of time the legislature is in session (usually six months out of two years) and keep them part time. The general thinking is that the less time they are in there the less damage they can do. California used to have a part time legislature but the liberals got rid of it. When I have given talks in the "Red States" there is a general consensus that government should be kept as small as possible and a knee jerk attachment to free markets. Such prejudices don't exist when I talk to groups in the large cities in the Blue States. I have aslo seen this in focus groups collected from Rock Concerts and Country Concerts. I have also seen polls and focus groups from Nashville and Hollywood and they are vastly different. I find the Hollywood results scary and the Nashville ones reasurring. I believe that it is this American distrust of large government that has kept us prosperous and free and find it disconcerting that many people have forgotten that. Luckily the average American has not.

Originally posted by Gattigap There's a difference between the spectrum of views on this board, and the spectrum of views in American political thought generally. Hank, Slave and bilmore, through their giggling exchange of DU posts, consistently ignore this reality.

FWIW, I think Ty's views actually are thoughtful and pretty centrist, compared to the larger spectrum, and feel that your inclination to characterize it differently is related to your same inclination to declare in the second post of an argument that anyone who has the temerity to question Iraq policy, CAFTA, or any Bush utterance is an idiot or a moron, and just wants Saddam in power.

FWIW, I like it and praise it, but it doesn't mean I can't criticize things within the economic system that I think are misguided, wrong, or stupid. Instituting a pledge that we love America's economic system in order to convince you that we're not commie pinko leftists is, IMO, not a very interesting debating strategy.
Of the peole that I know that post to this board (from different parts of the spectrum), the consensus is Ty is pretty far to the left. That is the general impression I get also. But that is really not important is it (except for the fact that he is more fun to argue with). Ty also thinks about his posts, gives back just as good as he gets, does his research (although sometimes from sources I find dubious but I am sure he finds my sources equally dubious) often from primary sources. I like arguing with Sidd but it is not as much fun because he is not as liberal as Ty.
