The land doesn't sink, except in movies. It shakes. The shaking is really bad on soft soil, like fill. And it's tough on buildings that aren't up to code. California has been spending a lot of money since 1989 to retrofit buildings so that they will survive a big one. (Loma Prieta was not a big one.)
