A large portion of that usually comes up front as guaranteed payment, usually in the form of a signing bonus. The parties regularly agree to ludicrous sums in the later years of a long term contract knowing that it will be renogiated for salary cap/performance reasons (though this can have a negative impact on the player's value to the team as trade bait).
