According to Michael Moore, the Canadians have almost as many guns per capita as we do, though his movie was a little murky on access (i.e., whether you can stroll into a Wal Mart in Saskatchewan and pick up some hot dogs and pistol). I was surprised, though, at the sheer number of guns in Canada, given the relative paucity of shooters there.
Though perhaps, that just means we're better shots.

One loses all credibility when one starts off a sentence with "according to Michael Moore". Anyway, assuming you are serious, the guns are generally for hunting. Urban gun ownership is low. Rural gun ownership - very high. When I was growing up, hunting accidents rivalled snowmobiling accidents for deaths of kids I grew up with. Just about every year it seemed a kid in the neighborhood would die because of one of those.
