On what beach? La Jolla? What are you wanting to do in San Diego? I don't really think of it as the ideal beach vacation place. I think that the OC has more beachy resorts for less of a drive if you want that sort of thing. SD is cooler (temp-wise) than LA and OC by 5-10 degrees (average temps in the mid to upper 60s year-round). I could help you out with downtown stuff if you are into city pursuits, but if it is purely beach stuff you want, I know La Jolla or Del Mar are the main resort areas, but I think they are more known for other things than purely beachy stuff. For example Torrey Pines golf resort.

That said, Hotel del Coronado is quite beachy. And generally very cool to visit (a landmark hotel). Not sure of the price, but as far as I know, it is the most beach-resort-feeling place I know of in SD. Excellent Sunday brunch also.
