Ok. In that case, go to del Coronado. Really it doesn't have any competition. There are some good hotels downtown that are on the bay, but not beachy at all. Coronado/downtown will be much more convenient for the touristy stuff than La Jolla (which is nice for a day of shopping and strolling (including lunch on the balcony at George's!), but otherwise a rip(off)).
And buy a good map before you get there because the signage is generally awful.
