Coronado/downtown will be much more convenient for the touristy stuff than La Jolla (which is nice for a day of shopping and strolling (including lunch on the balcony at George's!), but otherwise a rip(off)).
And buy a good map before you get there because the signage is generally awful.

I will definitely get a map and prepare myself psychologically for getting horribly lost.
The del Coronado looks fabulous, but if anyone has any slightly less pricey recs? I'm feeling cheap after the holidays.
