Not for beachy. But there are a ton of good, less spendy hotels downtown. I was in the Marriott (with a big convention center-type set up), which overlooks the harbor, for a convention this year, and it was much nicer than any Marriott I remember. I think there is also a Hyatt right next to that Marriott, which is also pretty new and, I'm sure, nice, though I haven't been in it.
Of course, the W and Westin downtown are excellent as well.

I have a vague memory of some beachfront hotels in Pacific Beach. Probably nothing 5-star, but on the beach, nonetheless.
