I'm not suggesting that Iran would talk to the US, or that Reid is correct in his criticism, or that a diplomatic solution would work. Just wondering that you view these positions as contradictory.

They are not contradictory, but the Europeans wanted the lead and also thought that a US lead negotiation would be counter productive.
