Best time to transition to private school

Bright pre-teen 6th grade boy (11) w attention issues is stagnating in local public school. Getting mostly Bs Cs but very bright and not fitting in with the Joneses. Doesn't do the work unless it's (1) interesting or (2) he's on the brink of failure. Scores in the average range in standardized tests, except for IQ. Thinking because of attention issues that a boarding school might be better but he does seem a little young for that now. Might want to have him step back and go a year behind. For example, have him go into 6th after 6th here or go into 7th there after 7th here.

Also good (but not superstar) athlete who basically competes in any sports he tries but doesn't have enough initiative to truly excell. Would like athletics program to be a part of the mix.

Any thoughts on when to make the transition? Any other suggestions?
