If you wanted to spend a bit more for a camera with which you would be more careful (tsk tsk), you could get a small Panasonic Lumix. My brother and I each have one of the larger ones and they're outstanding; I understand the compact one is just as good.
Oh, oh, oh -- neither one has annoying "shutter" lag, like I have experienced with Canons and Nikons.

Another good reason to love the Lumix is that they have a shutter mechanism designed in conjunction with Leica and optics that are built by Zeiss.
Nikon is a wonderful brand, and for a digital or film SLR, there's no other brand I'd even consider, but at the low end Nikon has a real problem with shutter lag that I found made my Nikon digital point and shoot virtually worthless for much other than taking pictures of outdoor statues and sculpture.
